If you had told me a year ago that I would see the vast majority of ancient fortresses and fortified cities in the Balkans, I wouldn’t have believed you.
But over the last three months we’ve visited dozens of them across eight different countries and after much deliberation, I have decided on my favorite four, which I’ve selected based on the most impressive views and overall enjoyability – the kind of places where you’d want to plop down and drink a beer or read a book while taking in your surroundings:
