When we arrived in Montenegro in March, the beaches of the Budva Riviera looked a lot like this.
Beginning in April, the beaches went through a transformation befitting of its own Extreme Beach Makeover reality show. Adam and I would walk miles of beach everyday and watch people hard at work – removing litter and rocks, building platforms and lifeguard towers, varnishing beach chairs and side tables, setting up swim lanes, changing stations and showers – transforming the beaches from gorgeous and serene – but neglected – to shiny, busting beach resorts.
I took hundreds of pictures of this transformation in April and May and want to share some of my favorites:
By early June, things started coming together and the beaches we had known months before were now unrecognizable.

As we won’t be in Montenegro for the summer we’ll miss the final phase of this makeover. It’s for the best though – we’ve always been more partial to beaches like this anyway:
