Ostrog: The Monastary Built Into The Side of a Mountain

The Monastery of Ostrog is the most popular pilgrimage site in Montenegro. It’s a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church and was built – somehow – in the 17th century against an almost vertical background, high up in the large rock of Ostroška Greda. The builder and founder, Vasilije Ostroški (later to become Saint Basil) is credited as being a great healer and his bones can be visited in their sepulchral chapel, watched over by a black-robed pigtailed monk.
